Problems can pile up when you work for the largest hospital system in the world. HCA Healthcare used a company-wide hackathon called Coding for Caregivers to solve the 30 biggest needs of our 90,000 nurses across 186 hospitals.
My team's project focused on one of the biggest threats to good care: hand hygiene—which is proven to be the single biggest cause of infection at hospitals.
Problems can pile up when you work for the largest hospital system in the world. HCA decided to do a company-wide hackathon called Coding for Caregivers, targeting the 30 biggest needs of our 90,000 nurses across 186 hospitals.
My team consisted of a PM, several clients within the clinical team, and the Pacific Region's eng group. None of my business or eng stakeholders had any experience working with a UX designer or the HCA design system, Neutron. And that was the point: This was an opportunity to design a true zero-to-one app for a real user and business need—and demonstrate the power of cross-functional collaboration and design thinking,
Once we had a solid prototype that had been vetted by product, clinical and the business, I created a storyboard to tell the "why" behind the product decisions. I presented this storyboard to VP of Engineering Marty Pasick, with the product team providing context and eng details.
By the end of Day 1, in collaboration with my PM, I had wireframed a few ideas that I thought solved this problem on a mobile phone—the target device for users. Quickly, these ideas were presented to our team, and we cut things out that seemed not minimally important to success.

On Day 3, I designed the first of several functional prototypes. These assets helped us validate our feature and interaction design assumptions.
Our fully-functional prototype blew leadership away. HCA decided to green light the full production of HandWatch at the enterprise level, and to product it both as a web and native iOS app.
